STUDENT ASSIGNMENT
Digital Storytelling Project
9th Grade Library Students - Learning About Genres
Directions & Process
We have been learning about all of the different genres that are available in the library.
Objective: Now it’s your turn to tell us about one of your favorite books (books or ebooks), 1) identify and describe its genre, 2) provide your own review of the book, and 3) clearly explain at least 3 reasons why you enjoy your book of choice. (Your reasons could possibly be (but is not limited to) any of the following: you can relate to the characters in the story, explaining what you have in common; the topic of the book is connected to your personal interests, providing details to support why this is true, the setting of the book appeals to you, justifying your reasons with your own opinions, etc.).
You will be creating a digital presentation and will present it to the class on the SMART Board. You can use my sample script and video model for reference. You will use Storyboard That to create the individual jpg panels and will upload them into iMovie in order to create the video and audio for your final product. Your digital story should be at least 5 minutes long, but not longer than 7 minutes long. Any images or audio files that you find online must be cited. Refer to the rubric to make sure you are meeting the expectations of this assignment.
Follow these steps:
Day 1 & 2: Create a script for your digital story as a Google Document based on the objectives listed above. I will provide a script template for you to use.
Submit your progress to the check-in assignment on Google Classroom. (Directions are included in the posted assignment instructions.)
Day 3: Use StoryboardThat.com to create your Story Board.
The directions to log in have been provided in Google Classroom. We will review this in class.
Create your Story Board using the available images provided in Story Board That. Remember to create a title page with your first and last name, and include an image of your favorite book on the first slide of your story. You will also create a Works Cited page as the last slide of your story (if you prefer, you can create the Works Cited page as a Google Slide and save it as a jpg and then upload to iMovie).
Choose 3 characters from the available choices, or upload your own by searching on Pixabay.com (all images/audio not found in Story Board That must be cited). The character that you choose should reflect your favorite book’s genre (for example, you can choose a dragon or wizard for fantasy, an alien for science fiction, etc.).
Include text for each character, and have them describe the attributes of your genre, referring to your script.
Submit your progress to the check-in assignment on Google Classroom.(Directions are included in the posted assignment instructions.)
Day 4: Continue working on your project.
Provide examples of books that belong to the genre you chose or if your book is part of a series, you can use those instead.
Include an explanation and your own review of your favorite book, along with the 3 reasons why it’s your favorite.
Finally, describe other ways to discover your book choices (interests, hobbies, career choices, self-help, movies, book series, public library, book clubs, etc. - all these ideas have been discussed in class).
Download your Story Board That images as separate jpg files and import them into iMovie.
Submit your progress to the check-in assignment on Google Classroom.(Directions are included in the posted assignment instructions.)
Day 5: You will be the narrator of your story. Use iMovie’s recording feature to record the voice of the main character, and you can ask anyone you choose to voice the other two characters (your classmates, siblings, etc.) or you can download the Readme - Text to Speech Reader chrome extension found here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/readme-text-to-speech-rea/npdkkcjlmhcnnaoobfdjndibfkkhhdfn?hl=en-US, paste the text of your script for the other two characters into the app, choose the voice (there are plenty to choose from), and record the voice in iMovie.
If you also want to add audio soundtracks or sound effects, you can use iMovie’s audio soundtracks and sound effects feature to add them to your project.
Day 6: Continue working on your project. Use Noodletools to create the citations for your Works Cited page for any images or audio that you may have downloaded from the internet.
Submit your progress to the check-in assignment on Google Classroom.(Directions are included in the posted assignment instructions.)
Day 7: Finish up and upload your final iMovie project to Google Classroom. This day will be your chance to ask any other questions and ask for help with any technical issues you may have.
Day 8 - Day 10: Present your project in class. For those students who are remote, you will be able to share your screen in our Zoom or Google Meet session.
